بيتر مآس صحفي غطّى ضمن مهامه الحرب فى البوسنا فى بدايات تسعينات القرن العشرين – و قد شملت تلك الحرب مجازرا و إغتصابات جماعيّة إقترفتها الأغلبيّة السربيّة فى حقّ الأقلّية البسنيّة المسلمة عقب إنهيار يوغسلافيا – و غزوات الولايات المتّحدة و إحتلالها للعراق و أفغانستان . و فى 9 أفريل 2024 / فى مقال رأي فى جريدة " واشنطن بوست " كتب مآس مقالا قويّا ضد الحرب الإباديّة الجماعيّة التى تشنّها اليوم إسرائيل ضد الشعب الفلسطيني فى غزّة ، و قدّم تجربته الخاصّة كشاهد على جرائم حرب ماضية ليؤكّد : " عندما تقصف إسرائيل القنابل و تطلق الرصاص الحيّ على المدنيّين و تحول دون وصول المساعدات الغذائية إلى مستحقّيها و تهاجم المستشفيات و تقطع التزوّد بالمياة ، أتذكّر الفظائع نفسها التى جدّت فى البوسنة . "
و يُذكّر مآس بمعاينته لمدنيّ بوسنى جرحه قنّاص سربي فى البوسنة و كان هذا الجريح يحاول الزحف إلى مكان آمن . و يقول إنّ ما يجرى الآن يذكّره بتلك الحادثة . " عمندما شاهدت مشهد شريط فيديو مريع عن غزّة قبل فترة قصيرة وهو يُظهر جدّة ، هالة خريس وهي تسعى إلى مغادرة حيّ كانت القوّات الإسرائيليّة تحاصره . كانت تتنقّل بحذر و تمسك بيدحفيدها الذى لم يتجاوز عمره 5 سنوات وهي تحمل باليد الأخرى علما أبيضا . و فجأة سُمع دويّ إطلاق نار و سقطت على ألرض ميّتة . مجهر بنادق القنّاصة مجهر قويّ يمكّنهم من رؤية من يُطلقون عليهم النار " .
يتحدّث مآس أيضا عن قصّة أسرته الخاصة . فأجداده من الذين قدّموا أموالا طائلة للمشروع الصهيوني للهجرة إلى فلسطين و تأسيس دولة إسرائيل ز و كما يشير إلى ذلك اليهود فى أمريكا " يشعرون بالإرتباط بتأسيس إسرائيل "إلاّ أنّه يثير مسألة حيويّة و ملحّة : " ما الذى على اليهودي / اليهوديّة القيام به الآن ؟ " و إجابته هي : " على كلّ إمرء أن يختار بنفسه غير أنّ تجربتى مع جرائم الحرب تعلّمنى أن أكون يهوديّا يعنى أن أقف ضد أيّة أمّة تقترف جرائم حرب ، أيّة أمّة مهما كانت " .
و يشير مآس عن حقّ إلى أنّ أعمال إسرائيل فى غزّة تصنّف كإبادة جماعيّة فى ظلّ معايير القانون الدولي و إلى أنّ " ضحايا الإبادة الجماعيّة – كما كان اليهود ضحيّة محرقة الهولوكست – ليس لهم حقّ إرتكاب إبادة جماعيّة " . و كما يلاحظ ، ضمن حركة الإحتجاجات ضد حرب إسرائيل فى غزة يوجد يهود يعلنون " ليس بإسمنا " ؟ و يصف مآس كيف أنّه وهو يشارك فى إحتجاج حديث خارج منزل القيادي فى الحزب الديمقراطي ، شوك شومر ، فى بروكلين ، شاهد مرأة " تضع كوفيّة حول خصرها و ترفع يافطة كتبت عليها رسالتها بخطّ اليد : " ممرّضة يهوديّة ضد الإحتلال " . و كانت تحتجّ ليس فحسب على قتل المدنيّين بل أيضا على عقود طويلة من الإحتلال العسكري للأراضى الفلسطينيّة ، وهو أساس المشكل " .
و فى منتهى الأهمّية أنّ مآس كتب ذلك فإزاء دور الولايات المتّحدة فى هذه الحرب الإباديّة الجماعيّة ، يقع على عاتق ليس اليهود فحسب بل كافة الناس فى الولايات المتّحدة واجب التعبير عن معارضتهم لذلك : " حكومة الولايات المتّحدة هي الداعم الرئيسي لإسرائيل وهي تواصل مدّ حكومة بنيامين نتنياهو المتطرّفة بالقنابل و الأسلحة الأخرى . الأمريكيّون متورّطون فى ذلك ".
