Jawad Ghalom
A Dream Dodging Its Prey
Translated by: Adil Saleh Al-Zubaidy

For nights you have been sneaking into the folds of my papers-;-
Slipping through the open doors of my language-;-
Mastering the tricks of a cunning mouse.
You move your seat towards me, hoping
That my porter will let you in.
You wait for my hand to signal to you.
O wait, you Dream, stuffed with panic,
Wait for some days until I ,
For I have not slept my nights well.
Scared, the sirens sounded,
Penetrated me, measuring the time when they will be choked,
Enwrapped me from top to toe,
And the roaring sound dumbfounded me.
Go back where you came from-;-
Peruse the corners of a disappointed lover’s mind,
Or a broke dreaming of wealth,
Or a haughty rebel seeking the shudder of power,
Though for seconds.
You are a boring quest, not welcomed now-;-
Let me not hit your nape with my mop.
I know you slip out of my hand like soapsuds,
And squat like an obedient watchdog.
I am not generous enough to welcome you-;-
My purse is empty and poverty-stricken-;-
My wings broken and unable to hold you up-;-
Not strong enough to carry your great expectations-;-
My fields are salt marshes with heaps of thistles-;-
We are afraid to cross them together.
My left arm can be shaken by a bird’s feather-;-
Tremor overcame it and affected its sinews-;-
It’s hard to pat your shoulder-;-
My boyhood has been sucked up by pretty girls my memory cannot count,
Since my first step into the Sabunchia brothel.
I emptied my lust into the whorehouses of Soho.
I am not a Platonic lover wooing beauties of my enemies,
Or waiting for the breeze from these beauties to inhale.
I can be filled with any feminine flesh served on my table-;-
I move my heart between Caribbean brownies and African blacks-;-
Liberian bronzies and Baltic whites infatuate me.
I cannot bear it that I beg you while you let another woman share my bed.
I abhor showing up at literary festivals of fake glitter.
I despise the feigned smile with camera maniacs-;-
They have gathered like flies on a candy.
The spotlights dazzle my eyes-;-
The microphone stuns my head and takes my calm away.
I seek not lining up with celebrities stuffed with straw-;-
Sufficient for me my poems have been snatched by papers
Both red and yellow, cheap and rich, captivated and mercenary-;-
Those pretending to be professional.
My banquet is scanty and lacks delicacies and spit roasting-;-
I have no time for ravenousness and gluttony.
My homeland has been torn up by beastlike, fake saints-;-
Gashed by the canine claws of tribal sheikhs
And wearers of cowboy hats,
And the scum of my folk who shit in the open desert.
I no longer sit with them and listen to their narcissist talk-;-
My pedigree and origin have sent me off into a far-off diaspora-;-
I am lonely, helpless, with nobody to bend on and no cane to stand on
Spiders invade my roof, ensnaring my words-;-
I cannot let my word-butterflies fly
To avoid being caught in their snares.
O persistent, ugly-looking dream,
What made you fancy sharing my bed?
There is no enough room for fun-;-
No hope close enough to my ground to catch-;-
No good news to smile to me so that I can smile back-;-
My mattress stings because of the thistles of my barren deserts-;-
My pillow is hard granite like the hearts of warlords-;-
Let me not release my hand and twist your neck-;-
Stop competing with me-;-
It’s impossible to prey upon me despite my weakness-;-
My flesh is bitter and my blood is incendiary aqua fortis-;-
My back is scaly, too hard for your teeth-;-
My weapon’s Moses’ staff that swallows your magic-;-
My millstone is much ado about nothing, but it will give you a headache-;-
It will turn your head into endless war drums-;-
So, get back to seal my door with red wax-;-
It’s my word and promise which I engraved on my neck
I will your hope under my pillow,
And come to you voluntarily when my wakefulness is complete,
When my nation wakes up so full of health
To do its morning exercises in the open air.
