Over the years, there has been an increase in the search for affordable and natural methods of improving poultry production in farmers and scientific researchers. Coconut oil is one of the natural products that can be used to boost poultry production. A recent scientific research study has focused (Harahap et al., 2026) on how the addition of a little bit of coconut oil into the chicken diet may impact growth, egg production, and egg quality in particular.

The purpose of this article is to summarize the results of this study in an easy-to-understand form.

Importance of Feed in Poultry Farming

Feed plays an important role in poultry production because it influences the growth and productivity of chickens. In this regard, high costs of feed coupled with the need to minimize the use of chemicals have prompted farmers to opt for natural solutions.

Coconut oil is one such substitute. Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are unique fat components known as being:
• Digestible
• Easily transformed into energy sources
• Useful in aiding gut health

Concept of the Study

This study was conducted on 240 local chickens (the Merawang breed) for a total duration of seven months. They were distributed into four different categories:
• No coconut oil (control group)
• 1% of coconut oil added to their feed
• 2% of coconut oil added to their feed
• 3% of coconut oil added to their feed

They studied:
• Body weight
• Amount of feed consumed
• Body morphology
• Egg production and quality

Important Results of Adding Coconut Oil

1. Increased Development at the Correct Amount

Chickens that were given coconut oil in amounts of 1%-2% demonstrated:
• Increased body weight
• Accelerated growth
• Effective body development

It is interesting to note that too much coconut oil – 3% – had a negative impact on chicken performance.

2. More Efficient Use of Food by Chickens

Coconut oil allowed chickens to utilize feed more effectively. That means:
• It took less amount of food to gain weight
• The energy contained in food was used more effectively

It happened due to rapid energy digestion.

3. Improved Physical Characteristics

As a result of adding coconut oil, it was possible to observe improved characteristics:
• Chest width (crucial for meat production)
• Leg and body length
• General body size

4. Increased Egg Production

Chickens supplied with 1% coconut oil showed:
• Maximum daily output of eggs (Hen Day Production)
• Small increments in egg weight and shape

Eggs were:
• Longer than normal
• Of better quality

5. No Harmful Effects on Health

Mortality rates were low and constant for all groups (approx. 3-5%). This shows coconut oil is harmless to birds when administered properly.

How Does Coconut Oil Help?

Here are the biological processes by which coconut oil affects poultry:
• Fast acting source of energy: MCFA quickly absorbed and used by the body
• Improved digestion: Promotes gut and digestion -function-s
• Antimicrobial activity: Reduces pathogens in the body
• Boosted immunity: Promotes good health

Tips for Farmers

Considering the findings of the study, here are some practical tips:
• ✅ Include 1-2% coconut oil in the feed of chickens
• ❌ Don t use more than 2-3% since high amounts can harm productivity
• ✅ Thoroughly mix oil with the feed before administering it
• ✅ Consider this oil as an alternative to artificial additives

Conclusion

This research proves that even a tiny amount of coconut oil can create a huge effect on the output of birds. In other words, farmers can enjoy the following benefits:
• Better health of their chickens
• Increased body weight
• Higher number of eggs laid
• Additional revenue
