The Road to Nyala

We read scientific research in a literary manner, and we write that reading in an innovative narrative story format, within our scientific literary project to simplify applied sciences for the general public and specialists. The creative narrative style can be easily and readily understood by the general public and specialists, and even be palatable, digested, and revisited, and recounted in the future. Transforming the scientific research published in specialized scientific journals into a short, creative, and innovative scientific story that does not exceed one page makes it easier for everyone to access all that is new and innovative published in scientific journals, in light of the scientific explosion and rapid development that man in the modern era cannot keep up with except by summarizing, simplifying, and re-presenting everything that is long and complex.

Here is a short and innovative scientific story about (traditional means of transportation and their impact on the care, behavior, and blood characteristics of local chickens), inspired by the following research:
Adam, S. Y., Ahmed, A. A., Jammaa, M. H., AL Makhmari, M. R., Husien, H. M., Essa, M. O. A., ... & Cai, D. (2025). Traditional Transportation Methods and Their Influence on Local Chicken Welfare, Behavior, and Blood Profiles: A Policy Considerations. Veterinary Sciences, 12(9). DOI: 10.3390/vetsci12090798

The Road to Nyala

The bus moved down the road to Nyala, its metal body creaking with each bump. From the windows, sticks were hung, tied with twine, from which hung the chickens, legs bound together, feathers fluttering in the hot wind.

To the farmers, this was just another day’s journey. But to the chickens, this was a struggle hardwired in their very DNA.

Inside each chicken, battles were raging. Blood sugars were soaring, white cells multiplying in anticipation of a conflict to come. Hearts were pounding, breathing rapid, stress sparks—reactive oxygen species—igniting in their very cells. Some tried to scratch when removed from the bus, but even this urge was replaced by long stretches of stillness, tonic immobility, as fear consumed them.

Abdel, a young farmer, sat by the window, his eyes fixed on a chicken with mottled feathers. She was quiet, her eyes glazed, but there was something in the way her wings moved that unsettled him. His grandfather’s words came to him, “Chickens are small, but they feel as we do. Their silence is not peace it is pain.”

The market at Nyala was alive with the sounds of traders weighing, trading, and laughing, but the chickens were removed from the sticks, feathers gone, eyes dull. To most, they were simply meat to be consumed.

But Abdel hesitated, untied the mottled chicken himself, feeling the trembling in her legs. For the first time, he saw not just a chicken, but a traveler who had borne the cost of tradition in her very blood.

He made a promise to her, but one she could not hear, “Next time, it will be different. You will ride sitting beside me.”

Perhaps no one else heard. Perhaps the road to change begins with a single chicken, a single farmer willing to listen.
