Release of Villa of the Angel of Death, a Novel by Hamid Oqabi: A Literary Outcry Against the War in Yemen and the Theocratic Regime
The Forgotten Margins of Life in the City of Hodeidah
Thuraya Ben Sheikh: A Humanist Novel That Blends Narrative, Theatrical, and Cinematic Elements
A Poetic Visual Tapestry Weaving Madness, Love, Writing, the Body, and Death

Cairo – Paris

Published by Mouton Al-Muthaqqaf Publishing and Distribution House, Villa of the Angel of Death is the latest novel by Yemeni writer and filmmaker Hamid Oqabi. This narrative work exposes the devastating impact of the war in Yemen and dismantles the structure of the oppressive theocratic regime that consumes the present and future of Yemenis through violence, repression, and destructive political adventures.

Set in a neglected medical facility on the outskirts of Hodeidah, the novel follows the lives of marginalized individuals and the living dead, in a place people call “the Villa of Death.” There, where dust replaces medicine and dampness replaces compassion, broken characters search for a trace of meaning in a disfigured reality.

Mostiko, a young nurse, is punished for rejecting the advances of a powerful official and is exiled to this medical "nowhere." She secretly records her daily observations, bearing witness to collective agony and the collapse of humanity. Alongside her are women like Um Baksh, who refuses to accept her son’s death, and Shaabana, who sold everything to save her husband—only for him to return to her insane. Symbolic figures emerge as well: Chekhov, the intellectual who clings to dreams, and Bino, who awaits the end of the world via an imaginary asteroid.

Despite its bleakness, the novel refuses to surrender to despair. It keeps a flame of rebellion alive—in a secret kiss, a rose blooming amid decay,´-or-a hidden notebook written against forgetting.

With this novel, Hamid Oqabi continues his aesthetic project of blending fiction, theater, and cinema into a dense visual style that draws on his wide artistic experience, where image, sound, and silence all play integral narrative roles.

In her special preface to the novel, Dr. Thuraya Ben Sheikh, poet and critic, writes:

“This is a profoundly human and universal novel. It combines narrative, theatrical, and cinematic storytelling with a poetic and masterfully heated scenario.”

She has frequently expressed her admiration for the novel’s technique and its vivid “cinematic spirit.”

The novel offers a fierce critique of the corrupt theocratic authority ruling Yemen—an authority mired in absurd ventures to prolong the war while failing to provide even the bare minimum of dignity´-or-livelihood to civilians. Through its characters and setting, the novel exposes the collapse of meaning, the failure of the state, and the erosion of humanity under the illusion of purity and empty salvation slogans.

Hamid Oqabi, based in France, is one of Yemen’s most prominent contemporary voices—a multidisciplinary writer spanning fiction, theater, cinema, and poetry. Since 2015, he has published 17 novels marked by intense visual storytelling and engagement with themes such as war, love, sexuality, death, exile, and intoxication. His creative output surpasses 50 works—fictional, theatrical, and poetic—distinguished by formal experimentation and defiance of convention.

Notably, the novel’s cover painting is by the author himself, reflecting his identity as a visual artist. The abstract, somber artwork encapsulates the novel’s atmosphere and visual symbolism: shadowy human figures, fractured lines, a blurry horizon—as if the painting was born from the novel,´-or-the novel emerged from the painting.

In its closing, the novel offers an interior vision of Yemen—not through political slogans´-or-news reports, but through a raw artistic lens grounded in a fragile body, a small notebook, and a city moaning in silence.

Summary of the Novel:

In Villa of the Angel of Death, Hamid Oqabi delves into the forgotten margins of Hodeidah, where a crumbling medical facility becomes a stage for human anguish under a corrupt theocratic regime bent on dehumanization. The story centers on Mostiko, a young nurse exiled to the villa as punishment, who becomes a witness to life’s unraveling beneath hunger, fear, and isolation. Narration shifts between shattered women like Um Baksh and Shaabana, and absurd symbols like Chekhov and Bino. This is not merely a record of war, but a revelation of its existential and psychological toll, where madness, love, writing, the body, and death interweave in a poetic visual fabric. Villa of the Angel of Death is a protest novel—a burning artistic act that speaks for those buried by war without graves.
