The conflict in the Middle East has developed rapidly in the last period with which, all hopes for peace made by the U.S. administration of President Obama are about to collapse. It could also threaten the fragile stability in the region and allows the rise of extremism, whether from al Qaeda and its supporters or Iranian intervention in the emergence of more hotbeds of sectarian clashes in some Arab countries already suffering from the economic and social conditions.
• This situation ended up with Mahmoud Abbas withdrawing his candidacy for the presidency again because of despair.
• The extreme right-wing government in Israel continues ignoring the recommendations and resolutions of the United States regarding the settlements freeze and keeps deteriorating the positive steps taken by previous governments (such as the Olmert government) to reach a realistic solution.
• In the midst of this, the forces of extremism in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria enhance their hostile positions with support from Iran. In its issue of November 17th 2009, Financial Times newspaper called President Obama to:
1. ‘Publishing a blueprint of a two-states solution and a Palestinian homeland on most of the West Bank and Gaza, with east Jerusalem as its capital, and placing it before the UN Security Council. The outlines are well-known: the (Bill) Clinton parameters of December 2000, the Taba agreements of 2000-01, and the Arab League peace plan of 2002’
2. Stop the unlimited support for Israel, which was provided by the previous U.S. governments, especially in the UN Security Council.
What is important now is that two neighbouring states solution - Palestine and Israel - living in peace is to take place as soon as possible and prevent the extremists from both sides to delay it.
