HOW COULD I EVER FORGET?
By Mahmoud Said Kawash
How could I forget the night passion called me
To the sanctuary of her whose very phantom mingled with my blood?
I stood at her door and whispered, "Come,"
To the heart whose meeting defies all de-script-ion.
She drew near in haste and cast herself
Into my embrace, asking no questions of her enamored lover.
I sipped the nectar from those lips-;-
The honey burst forth, and she uttered no word of protest.
I drank the heat from those breasts-;-
I drew them to my lips, and they set my mouth aflame.
I gathered all my courage to hold her close-;-
She swayed with pride, her lips pursed in a tender curve.
A flush appeared upon her cheeks—I imagined it
The last of the sunset melting into the horizon of the sky.
Afra, listen to my whisper in your ear-;-
My intimate plea pierces the heart with its ache.
Dark-skinned beauty...
Fair-haired beauty...
My days draw to a close, yet your promise remains silent-;-
Spare my lyre—it shall not shatter.
Afra, have mercy on this burning passion and love-;-
Go gently, my tormentor, with this bleeding heart. Thirst
Dark-complexioned...
Fair-complexioned...
Grant me your -union- to soothe my emotions,
For how often have I woven a ladder of feelings for you.
I wandered, lost in my sorrow, pacing to and fro,
While its promised yearning hovered all around me.
I kissed her and grew intoxicated by her breath-;-
My limbs went limp, and my thirst was quenched.
