ANOTHER WOMAN
By Mahmoud Said Kawash
Forgive me-;- I am another woman—
One who neither loves nor desires you,
Nor spends her nights dreaming of seeing´-or-meeting you.
A serious woman who never even thought of you—let alone tried to forget you.
Forgive me-;- I am another woman—
Unversed in the language of love and romance,
A woman unlike the women of these times.
A woman skilled in many things
Beyond mere dreams and infatuation.
Forgive me-;- I am another woman—
Who speaks not the language of lovers,
Nor masters the language of hypocrisy.
The path to her is not paved with roses,
Perfumes,´-or-embraces,
But with a heap of hardships and thorns.
I am no prey for you to catch, O you ignorant of the nets.
Forgive me-;- I am another woman—
Proud and unyielding, unlike the rest.
A woman unmoved by your smile,
Uncharmed by your most captivating glances,
And unresponsive to the temptations you offer.
She stands firm in her values, like towering mountains.
Another woman who honors her Creator
And shuns all grave transgressions.
She never dreamed of love, save for that which draws her closer to Paradise-;-
A woman who seeks to be gathered only among the righteous.
All this because I am another woman—
Yes, another woman.
