Off--script-
By Jenny Hussien Ali
A serious writer decided to go out with his characters. He had intended it as a solemn outing—a quiet, dignified stroll along the river to help them process the devastating weight of their destinies. But from the moment they stepped into the afternoon light, his creations proved to be an utterly insufferable troupe of clowns. They cracked cheap jokes during his weightiest dramatic pauses, mocked their own tragic flaws, and treated the misery he had meticulously crafted for them like a carnival sideshow.
By the time they reached the middle of the bridge, with the gray Thames churning below, the author’s patience was thoroughly exhausted.
Without breaking stride, he seized the tragic protagonist by the lapels and hoisted him over the stone balustrade. Next went the heartbroken heroine, squeaking a ridiculous punchline on her way down, followed swiftly by the brooding existentialist, whose foolish giggles were cut short only by a heavy splash into the cold water.
A horrified onlooker rushed over, pointing at the ripples below in sheer disbelief. "Good God, man! What on earth did you just do?!"
The author smoothed the front of his coat with cold, trembling hands, adjusted his collar, and glared into the murky river with profound disgust.
"They refused to go off--script-."
