A Rebuttal to Kamal Ghobrial’s "The Epic of Wrath and the Fate of Humanity"
In his latest article, "The Epic of Wrath and the Fate of Humanity," Kamal Ghobrial departs from rational political analysis into the realm of ideological propaganda. By employing "epic" language and mythological metaphors, Ghobrial attempts to legitimize extreme military violence, using the "Mongols" as a historical bogeyman while crowning the "Israeli Lion’s roar" as a civilizational saviour. However, a close examination reveals a profound flaw in both his historical understanding and his application of modern values.
The "Mongols" Between Historical Fact and Distorted Use
Ghobrial invokes the "flood of Tatars and Mongols" as a symbol of pure destruction, falling into a trap of historical superficiality. Historically, the Mongols were not "barbarians" in a chaotic sense; their military campaigns, including the destruction of cities, were part of a functional "Blitzkrieg" tactic—calculated to break the will of resistance and impose swift order (much like the "Shock and Awe" strategies of modern warfare).
The irony Ghobrial overlooks is that once the Mongols established control, they transformed into empire-builders. Hulegu, whom history remembers for the sack of Baghdad, ordered a thousand officials to clean and reorganize the city immediately after its fall, and he patronized sciences and observatories. In contrast, the "protectors of civilization" whom the author praises are currently engaged in a "Tatars-like" destruction of infrastructure, universities, and hospitals, with no horizon for reconstruction or "cleaning." This makes his comparison rebound upon the very "Lion" he glorifies.

Double Standards: Violence as "Epic" vs. Violence as "Barbarism"
The author practices a blatant "moral selectivity." He blesses the "American Epic of Wrath" and the "Israeli Lion’s roar" despite their immense human cost, viewing them as a "dam" protecting humanity. Here, violence becomes "sacred" and "civilized" when committed by his allies, but "primitive and Mongol-like" when committed by his adversaries. This logic discards the concept of "International Law" that the author claims to cherish, replacing it with the "deification of brute force."

The "Bogeyman" of Identity and the Collapse of Global Order
Ghobrial links the survival of Europe and global energy security to the necessity of "crushing" the Iranian axis and its proxies. This is a coercive and arbitrary link designed to emotionally blackmail the Western reader.
• Realistically: The total wars the author advocates for are the primary catalyst for displacing millions and jeopardizing energy security.
• Legally: The international order established in 1945 is reeling today not only because of "New Mongols," but because of states (such as Netanyahu’s government) that refuse to comply with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), placing themselves above the law.

Pseudo-Modernity and Cultural Racism
Kamal Ghobrial’s discourse is essentially "exclusionist." He strips entire peoples and regional powers of their humanity—labelling them as "Dragons" and "Mongols"—to morally justify any military action against them. True civilization is not protected by "Epic Wrath," but by "Human Justice."
Distorting history to manufacture political "bogeymen" serves only warmongers. If the author truly fears for the fate of humanity, he should know that the greatest threat it faces is the "normalization of genocide" and granting it literary and philosophical cover, as he has done in his article.
