US imperialist aggression against Cuba must be confronted!

When the newspaper Arbejderen wrote a month ago in this editorial space that solidarity with Cuba is a necessity, the threat facing the island had already reached an unprecedented level.

The United States had kidnapped Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro and had halted the supply of vital oil that Cuba had previously received from Venezuela.

During this month, conditions on the island have worsened day by day. The constant and prolonged power outages affect all aspects of daily life. Cooking becomes difficult on stoves, while food rots in refrigerators, since both require electricity.

Lights cannot be turned on, cars cannot run, and garbage is left uncollected in the streets, leading to disease and pests. It is a man-made catastrophe with one clear objective: to break the will of Cubans and prepare them for regime change, driven by the United States.

This is only the beginning, if we listen to US President Donald Trump. During the first three months of this year, he has unleashed US imperialism across the world without any respect for international law.

Cubans have historically proven their willingness to defend their revolution with everything they have. Their determination and strength should be an inspiration to all.

After Venezuela, it is now Iran that suffers under US bombardment. Trump has stated that the next target is Cuba.

He said on Monday, March 16:
“I think I will have the honor of taking Cuba. Whether I liberate it or take it, I think I can do whatever I want.”

These statements came at a time when the entire island was experiencing a total power outage, and while real negotiations were taking place between the governments of Cuba and the United States regarding an “agreement” to lift the oil blockade.

Cuba’s president Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed that negotiations are ongoing and that Cuba is open to finding a solution that benefits both sides. Government representatives have also expressed willingness to allow Cubans in exile to invest and own businesses on the island.

However, they stressed that under no circumstances can Cuba’s socialist system be subject to negotiation.

Although negotiations may sound positive, the situation was very similar before the US and Israeli attack on Iran. There were also negotiations over a nuclear agreement, yet that did not prevent US imperialism from launching its attacks.

Cuba is in an extremely difficult situation, so pursuing negotiations is almost the only available option. Nevertheless, Díaz-Canel has emphasized that any military intervention will be met with “unbreakable resistance.”

Cubans have historically demonstrated their readiness to defend their revolution with full force, but the Cuban people cannot fight this battle alone.

Therefore, the response to the current situation must be the same as we stated a month ago: solidarity with Cuba, the demand to lift the blockade, both the oil blockade and the general blockade that Cuba has endured for six decades, and respect for the right of Cubans to self-determination.

The complete disregard shown by the United States for the sovereignty of other countries and for international law must be confronted. This is a fundamental task for all anti-imperialists who refuse to live in a world dominated by US imperialist ambitions.

Long live Cuba!
