Dear Yanar! Today is International Women’s Day!
Written by Muayad Ahmed on the 8th of March 2026
My dear comrade Yanar! My steadfast co-struggler through every trial and transformation of our tireless struggle for nearly three decades.
We mourn you, our dear comrade Yanar—the unwavering leader, friend, and torchbearer for millions of women, the dispossessed, and the oppressed. The resonance of your final words remains etched in my consciousness, vibrating through my entire being as tides of profound grief surge from the depths of my heart.
I hear the resonance of those words when you asked: "Muayad, is the meeting over? I was cut off from the final minutes." I said yes, and we began to speak of the war, the current situation, the women’s cause, our movement, and the perilous conditions facing this year’s March 8th ceremonies. All of this unfolded in the final hours of the first day of the current criminal US-Israeli war on Iran.
You were looking forward to welcoming March 8th this year amidst the conditions of this enslaving war, but to our deepest sadness, the hands of cowardly terrorist criminals reached out and assassinated you. These criminals are among the ranks of your enemies—the enemies of women, freedom, and communism, and they are many: the currents and parties of political Islam and its militias, the criminal Daesh (ISIS) and other terrorists, the masculine-nationalist fascists and the criminal imperialist powers… the list is long.
I have nothing to say on this March 8th, my dear comrade Yanar, except to continue the path of your struggle with all firmness and steadfastness. I will remain loyal to you and cherish you from the core of my heart--;-- we could never have sustained our communist and women’s emancipatory struggle with such momentum and stature without you and your immense contributions. You were not only a towering emancipatory women’s leader, but a steadfast, principled revolutionary communist and one of the most vital pillars of the contemporary communist movement in Iraq.
I have nothing to say except to express the sincerest loyalty to you by continuing the path of your struggle and your revolution against the entire structure of the unjust capitalist class system and all its reactionary political, intellectual, and cultural forces.
I vow to struggle with the resolve, power, and principle that characterised you—to uproot the enslavement of women, to win their liberation, and to strive for a communist revolution to eliminate all forms of exploitation, repression, wars, and terrorism.
Rest assured, my dear comrade Yanar, that we will carry forward your revolution for women s emancipation, rights, and equality with the utmost pride, striving for a world free of classes, states, and oppression.
Your enemies are the enemies of our resilient communist and Women’s-liberatory movement, and we are in the heat of a fierce war against them. We will exert every effort to unmask those who committed the crime of your assassination and the parties and forces that stood behind this brutal atrocity.
May the memory of the great struggling comrade Yanar Mohammed live forever!
Long live March 8th, International Women’s Struggle Day!
