With profound sorrow and grief, and with a shock that words cannot adequately express, the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq mourns to all progressive and liberationist forces, and to the feminist and human rights movements in Iraq and worldwide, the loss of its President and dear comrade, Yanar Mohammed, who was assassinated this morning, Monday, 2/3/2026, in Baghdad.

At exactly 9:00 a.m., two armed men riding motorcycles opened fire on her in front of her residence, causing critical injuries. Despite being transferred to the hospital and efforts to save her life, she passed away as a result of her wounds.

Yanar Mohammed dedicated her life to defending abused women and survivors of violence and trafficking. She played a central role in establishing and managing safe houses that sheltered hundreds of women fleeing oppression and exploitation. She was an uncompromising feminist voice and a steadfast stance against all forms of violence and discrimination, never retreating despite repeated threats and incitement campaigns against her.

We in the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq strongly condemn this cowardly terrorist crime and consider it a direct attack on the feminist struggle and the values of freedom and equality. We call on the relevant authorities to immediately uncover the perpetrators and those behind them, ensure their accountability under the law, and put an end to the impunity that threatens women human rights defenders in Iraq.

The loss of Yanar Mohammed is a devastating blow to the feminist movement. Yet her legacy of struggle will remain alive in every woman who reclaimed her life through her support, and in every stand taken against violence and discrimination. We pledge to her that the safe houses will remain open and that the organization’s voice will continue to be raised in defense of women and their right to a dignified and secure life.
