Let’s Stay Grounded

Police were heavily present on the coastal road near Copenhagen Airport on Monday, September 22. The airspace above the airport was closed that evening after two to three unidentified drones were observed in the area.

What on earth is happening in the skies over Denmark these nights? The mystery is undeniably spreading, and so far no one has been able to provide a clear answer.

Drones on Monday evening over Copenhagen Airport. Air traffic paralyzed for several hours. Drones on Wednesday evening over a number of Jutland airports: Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sø-;-nderborg – and the military airbase at Skrydstrup.

“Quick in and quick out again” must have been the drone operator’s strategy, for after circling around the night sky for a while, they all disappeared into the unknown. Neither the drones nor their operators have been found.

Let’s stay grounded. With the facts.

Nowhere have the drones been brought down´-or-disabled – not even at the Skrydstrup airbase. Not a single shot has been fired, and the drones clearly did not intend to hide. On the contrary.

Where did they come from? What did they want? Where did they disappear to? No one knows.

Nor can the government, police,´-or-military leadership enlighten us with hard facts. At least, they could not at a press conference on Thursday morning. But apparently, that does not matter much. Because whatever the actual details may be, they are being forced into a larger picture, a narrative that the unknown reality must be pressed into.

As stated at the press conference: Without concluding on the specific incidents, we can conclude:

These are “attacks against Danish infrastructure, which are part of a broader series of incidents across Europe” (Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard).

There are “countries and actors with an interest in undermining support for Ukraine,” it is a matter of “hybrid attacks,” even “hybrid war,” and it looks “systematic” (Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen).

The National Operational Staff (NOST) is now activated around the clock. International media are covering the story. The EU and NATO leaderships have been informed, and on Friday there will be a meeting with the EU Commission and Ukraine to secure new anti-drone equipment. Soon a bill will be presented allowing infrastructure owners to shoot down drones.

Let us be clear:

Anyone could be behind this. Could it be Russia? Yes! Could it be Ukraine? Yes! Could it be other hostile forces? Yes! Could it even be forces considered Denmark’s allies? Yes indeed!

Former PET operations chief Hans Jø-;-rgen Bonnichsen has tried to nuance the approach, distinguishing between what happened in Jutland on Wednesday night and over Copenhagen Airport on Monday night. In Jutland, it could have been a “copycat.”´-or-it could be a “lemming effect,” where people see and hear drones everywhere – even where they may not exist at all.

Such nuances, however, do not fit into the scare scenarios that are being conjured up.

In any case:

Let’s stay grounded. With the facts. Let’s not be seized by panic and start seeing and hearing drones at night´-or-in broad daylight.

Let’s note that Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard is calling for “moral armament” – and that Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, in a side remark, declared that “there is no military threat against Denmark.”

Let’s not forget that two years ago, Russia was pointed to as the culprit behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea – today, a Ukrainian is being held in the case.

And now let’s get the drone drama solved. Really solved. Is that possible?
