Technology in the Service of Capital or a Tool for Liberation?
A Book by Rezgar Akrawi on Capitalist Artificial Intelligence, the Challenges of the Left, and Possible Alternatives
Is It Time to Build a Digital International for the Left?
Published by Amaazon International, Rezgar Akrawi’s book “Capitalist Artificial Intelligence: Challenges for the Left and Possible Alternatives – Technology in the Service of Capital or a Tool for Liberation?” is now available in both Arabic and English.
This work addresses the issue of artificial intelligence in particular, and technology in general, within the context of class struggle in the digital age. It explores the impact of AI across various fields—economy, politics, culture, and thought—under contemporary capitalism. The book seeks to present a critical leftist analysis of artificial intelligence and offers progressive alternatives for its use, away from the capitalist domination that exploits it to maximize profits and reinforce control at the expense of intellectual and manual laborers.
The book focuses on the following points:
1. The digital gap between the left and capitalism
The digital divide between the left and capitalism constitutes a major challenge in the digital era, where large tech corporations and capitalist states dominate cyberspace. While these powers possess the material and technical means to shape technology and AI in all aspects, the left often finds itself in a position of weakness, struggling with a clear digital gap. In this context, the left’s current situation is likened to “an ant facing an elephant,” unable to keep pace with capitalist forces in this vast and rapidly evolving field. This divide is not only about lacking technical tools, but also reflects an unintended weakness in the political and organizational vision for using these tools in leftist struggle.
2. Digital illiteracy
Digital illiteracy does not only mean an inability to use digital tools; it also includes a lack of understanding of how these tools work and their effects on daily life, individuals, and communities. Generally, leftist organizations lack technical tools, or their use of them remains limited and rudimentary, restricting their ability to influence public awareness.
Digital literacy within leftist organizations is not merely about teaching members how to use devices and applications, but also about training them to understand the structure of digital systems through a critical awareness of the ideologies that govern them. Programs must equip members not only with technical skills but also with the ability to grasp the political, economic, and technical contexts that shape technology, enabling its use in the service of equality and social justice. Digital illiteracy leaves the left weak in the face of capitalist digital challenges and forms a barrier to its influence in the digital age. Therefore, training and developing the capabilities of leftist members, leaders, and coordinators, as well as broader audiences at different levels, in modern digital tools is essential to confront digital hegemony.
3. Developing leftist technical capacities as a strategic necessity
Developing leftist capacities in the technical field has become a strategic necessity alongside political, intellectual, organizational, media, and grassroots capacities. Just as the left cannot rely on capitalist media while seeking to build its independent media, and just as it develops its thought, policies, and organizational tools independently of bourgeois domination, it must also recognize that its struggle against digital capitalism cannot be waged using the tools of its adversary. Technological independence has become a fundamental condition complementing intellectual, political, and organizational independence.
True liberation or the building of a radical socialist project cannot be realized while leftist organizations remain under surveillance and control through AI tools developed by major states and corporations to serve their interests. How can a liberation movement plan, organize, and build its programs while being algorithmically subjected to systems designed to weaken it—or at least to filter, restrict, and limit the spread and effectiveness of its discourse?
Without independent leftist digital tools, the left remains defenseless, its organizational structures exposed, monitored, and vulnerable to neutralization at the press of a button. Can those struggling for socialist democratic change accept that their data, movements, and analyses of collective consciousness remain at the mercy of algorithms serving market logic and reproducing capitalist class domination in advanced digital forms?
4. The role of youth in digital transformation and development
Youth are a fundamental force in enhancing digital transformation and development within leftist organizations, serving as the driving power capable of renewing tools of political and social struggle in the digital age. Amid the rapid changes of the digital world, the role of youth in reducing digital illiteracy within leftist parties is of utmost importance. Youth form the backbone of any digital transformation within leftist organizations. Many young people today possess advanced abilities to handle digital tools and technologies more quickly and efficiently than previous generations.
Empowering youth within leftist organizations is essential to keeping pace with the digital era and using technical tools to counter capitalist digital hegemony. They can develop new tools of struggle that improve organization, mobilization, and influence on public opinion, introducing innovation and creativity into leftist struggle. With their high capacity to use technology, youth can play an active role in leading digital transformation within leftist parties, overcoming obstacles imposed by digital capitalism. It is essential to remove organizational and political barriers that prevent youth from joining or remaining in leftist organizations and to show flexibility toward them, in line with their intellectual growth and democratic awareness.
5. Digital leftist internationals
Building digital leftist internationals is essential to counter the dominance of large tech corporations and capitalist states over AI and digital technology in general. These digital internationals are a strategic necessity to confront capitalist hegemony in cyberspace, where major powers control technology, reinforcing exploitation and deepening class struggle. Digital internationals here mean global leftist and progressive alliances that transcend geographic borders and ideological divisions. Just as leftist and labor internationals were historically necessary to confront capitalism, it is now essential to build digital leftist alliances that focus on resisting capitalism through technology and uniting leftist efforts via digital tools and platforms.
Such internationals can enhance cooperation among leftist organizations worldwide in developing alternative, participatory, and open-source technologies to ensure technology serves society and advances social justice and equality. These digital alliances must overcome ideological differences among leftist currents, particularly in this field, and focus on the shared goal: wresting technology from capital’s grip and transforming it into a tool for collective liberation.
6. Artificial intelligence under capitalism
Despite AI’s vast potential to improve human life, it is currently being used to serve large corporations and capitalist states, functioning as an effective tool of digital repression and control. It is employed to reshape mass consciousness indirectly through algorithms that govern individuals’ behavior online.
These algorithms influence people’s choices and intellectual orientations, becoming instruments of ideological domination that reinforce capitalist and right-wing ideas while restricting leftist and progressive thought. Moreover, AI is used to strengthen discrimination in all forms—whether in the labor market or daily life—in line with capitalist values. It also has harmful environmental impacts and is exploited in criminal applications such as weapons development and warfare.
7. Leftist alternatives to AI
The alternative proposed in this book is a progressive leftist vision of AI that seeks to reclaim this technology for the people and direct it to serve the interests of intellectual and manual laborers. AI should be used not only to improve living conditions but also to dismantle capitalist domination through open-source and transparent leftist applications.
In this vision, technology becomes collective property under democratic, popular supervision, ensuring its use for society’s benefit. AI can be harnessed to enhance collective work, promote social justice and equality, and address issues such as poverty, education, health, and gender equality, free from the logic of profit and exploitation. It should be used to ensure fair resource distribution, guarantee equal job opportunities regardless of social or economic background, and even contribute to reducing working hours without reducing wages. AI can also serve as an effective tool to combat discrimination—whether gender-based or racial—by developing evaluation systems built on competence rather than bias, and it can support environmental protection, strengthen democracy, and uphold human rights.
8. Cautious and deliberate use of current AI
The left’s use of current AI should be cautious and deliberate. Although this technology is a capitalist, non-neutral product, it has immense potential that can be employed for social justice causes if used consciously, critically, and purposefully. This requires an open scientific mindset that views technology as a tool to be invested in for advancing political, social, media, and technical struggles. Such use must guarantee transparency, data privacy protection, and strict human oversight over AI applications. Any leftist use of these tools must serve socialist and progressive goals—not as a substitute for grassroots activism, but as a supportive and complementary force toward building radical social change.
9. Language, electronic publishing, and copyright
The book is written in simple, clear language to ensure accessibility to the widest audience, simplifying technical ideas so that both specialists and non-specialists can understand them. It is published through the global publishing house “Amazon” and is also available for free online, distributed electronically to maximize access without restrictions. The book is open to all, and its texts may be freely used—including reproduction or reuse—provided that the source is acknowledged where possible, though this is not mandatory.
10. Conclusion
The current digital revolution, despite its vast potential, has been engineered to serve capitalist profit and control. Yet the battle is not entirely settled, and capitalism has not created a fully closed world. There remains room for leftist alternatives, provided that the struggle is waged with awareness and long-term planning for what is a difficult and complex fight. Resistance to capitalism—especially in its digital form—is not only an economic and political power struggle but also a battle over human consciousness: over who controls the flow of information and knowledge, and who reproduces collective awareness.
In conclusion, the author calls for participation in reinforcing the leftist alternative to technology and AI through dialogue around the issues raised, as the ideas and proposals in this book are only starting points for a collective debate within the left.
Formulating a practical and effective alternative requires extensive discussions among leftist and progressive organizations, movements, and figures across countries, ultimately leading to a clear and applicable plan of action. The author’s goal is not to present ready-made solutions but to open a living debate on priorities—one that must become an open invitation to contribute to developing a digital leftist vision, alternative to AI in particular, and technology in general, through collective, organized, and transnational leftist effort.
