Report: Faten khater
Update: lawyer Sania Al-Dahmani was sentenced to two years in prison on June 30, 2025.

International human rights organizations have called for the immediate release of Tunisian lawyer and journalist Sania Al-Dahmani, and many civil society organizations have demanded her unconditional release, as she is being one and a half years in prison due to
The peaceful expansion of her opinion, and considers ”the ruling unjust and unjustified and considers it a violation of freedom of expression and human rights in Tunisia”.
Ms. El Dahmani, the political media influencer-The Chronicle, presenter of the International Television -union- Radio and Carthage Plus, is serving a prison sentence on the background of media statements classified as "insulting others through social media", "spreading false news", "compromising the prestige of the judiciary".
The arrest is an affront to trade -union- freedoms
The incident of Dahmani s arrest was a serious affront to trade -union- freedoms, as masked security personnel in civilian clothes stormed the headquarters of the Tunisian Bar Association on May 11, 2024, and arrested Ms. Dahmani, and on May 13 she was detained pending investigation by order of an investigating judge at the court of First Instance in Tunisia, on the background of statements she made on a television program, under Chapter 24 of Decree 54 on the list of crimes related to information and communication systems.
Many Tunisian and international organizations agree that these broad legal texts are used to prohibit legitimate expression of opinion and are used as a tool for political revenge in flagrant violation of the Tunisian constitution and the state s international obligations.
Unwanted statements on the issue of African migrants
The "Justice Committee", the International Court of justice condemned in February 2025 the verdict issued by the 17th Criminal Chamber of the court of appeal of Tunisia, according to which the lawyer and human rights journalist Sania Dahmani was sentenced to one and a half years in prison, describing the decision as" unjust and artificial " and considered it a flagrant violation of freedom of expression and Human Rights in Tunisia. Dahmani has made media statements regarding the issue of sub-Saharan African migrants in Tunisia, as well as the situation in Tunisian prisons.
The state of health of the Dahmani is deteriorating There have been several documented reports warning of a serious deterioration in Dahmani s health condition, and the recurrence of high blood pressure attacks that require careful treatment, health care and periodic observation, that is no get for her, which is a violation of international laws and norms for the treatment of prisoners such as the "Nelson Mandela Rules", and she suffers solitary confinement in her prison, theft of her belongings and the promotion of rumors.

Nelson Mandela Rules The UN rules for the treatment of prisoners, known as the "Nelson Mandela rules", are built on the basis of general rules, principles and practices accepted as reasonable principles and practices in the field of the treatment of prisoners and the management of prisoners everywhere and at any time. the first rule states: "all prisoners shall be treated with due respect for their dignity and inherent value as human beings. no prisoner shall be subjected to torture´-or-cruel, inhuman´-or-degrading treatment´-or-punishment, and all prisoners shall be provided with protection from all of that, no circumstances shall be invoked as justification for it, and the safety and security of prisoners, staff, service providers and visitors shall be ensured at all times."
Five journalists in Tunisian prisons
The committee of journalists had called in April 2025 for the immediate release of the political media detainee Sania Al-Dahmani after the appeals court reinstated the amended charges as criminal, which could lead to sentences of up to ten years. It is noteworthy that journalists Mourad zoghidi, Burhan Basis colleagues of Dahmani were arrested on the same day, Basis was arrested on the background of television comments critical of Tunisian President Kais said, while zoghidi was arrested because of his solidarity with journalist Mohamed Bou Ghaleb through publications on social media, they were sentenced to one year in prison on charges of defamation and false news.
We cry for mom ..We cry for my country
Miss Nour balltayeb publishes from time to Time publications, in which she describes the state of loss, sadness and loneliness in which her mother, Ms. Sanya Dahmani, cries, the last was a tearful publication describing a whole year of absence from her mother for the sake of words about freedom, the soul bleeds blood, she also tells us that the homeland was her mother, that Tunisia meant family to her, and that today everything has changed: "We cry for mom .. We cry for my country".

The hearing of Al-Dahmani s case was postponed several times for no apparent reasons, then she was presented to the investigative judge on June 11, rather than a prior warning´-or-the presence her lawyer accompanied, she returned to the hearing on the 16th and after her appearance, the case was postponed to June 30.
International organizations have condemned this approach : "the continuation of this repressive approach not only represents a violation of fundamental rights, but also reflects a serious departure from the international obligations undertaken by Tunisia, and puts it in a position of legal accountability to the international community".
