Poems by Mahmoud Said Kawash

I WAS A PRISONER

It happened that you committed your betrayal with thousands of letters that papers did not recognise
But I realised that the silence in your sanctuary was splendour, a poem, and rain!
I was forced into silence that the seasons of rain did not recognise
I was a prisoner among palms carrying fragrant flowers
I was crucified with chains behind the defeat of silence
I was loaded with your flavour
But I was a winter without rain
The clouds folded me and the dust of the stars covered me
The sands whispered in a defeated voice
I could not be with you
But now I am with you
So take me out of the silence of my letters
Wash me from the abundance of your sea
Purify me from the most despicable betrayals
Then leave me to pray for your sins!!
On lines I have long awaited
And let spring rain be your pulse in all seasons.

YOUR CHAINS ARE HUMAN COLONISATION

In your hands is a sword of oppression that revives defeat
My dream is crucified
My voice is strangled
My blood is defeated
Drags the tails of pain in my veins
Oh, my bleeding city
I have sinned
kI have lost the letters of my identity
Your chains are human colonisation
My humanity
You have defeated me
You have betrayed the purity of my freedom
You have drowned me
You have thrown me into the depths of the caves of darkness
The truest grains of day have disappeared from me
The light of joy has disappeared from my sky
You have inhabited my day in darkness
You have choked me with silence
Until my words got lost in my mouth
