WHENEVER THE NOSTALGIA OVERWHELMS HER
Poem by Mahmoud Said Kawash
The shadows of insomnia cover the fragrance of roses whose time has passed
In practising waiting habits!!
Like all nights, she rearranged the evening for him
Lit candles immersed in a deep closed slumber
When it was almost over, all wishes diminished with her
A deeper flame of certainty burned within her
She fought the exile of unreachable cities
Then continued to practice the meeting dance, like a professional drunkard
Sometimes to the tune of cohesion and other times to the tune of alienation
Just like what happened to her when she lived there “a thousand years ago”!!
Then she hid in a boat that took her to him
The waves of the sea kept her cold
Everything around her became shaded
And there was one shadow left for her soul to meet his shadow!!
At that time, she migrated to him among the birds of lightning and the playing of stars
The question that remained was, “What does she do whenever the nostalgia overwhelms her?”
