The absurdity of Ukrainian war
Kalil Chikha
In February of 2022, Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine attempting to overthrow the elected president, Zelenskyy. I thought at that time Putin would take him only one week to take control over the whole country and do the same thing as he did before in Chechnya. I was wrong because Ukrainian people were determined to fight for their democracy and freedom. It is almost a year and more than 40-thousand people have died and millions have been displaced. This war is causing more deaths and more human misery. I view the attack by Putin on Ukraine as a similar event in history as the event of the occupation of Poland by Adolf Hitler in the Second World War. At that time, the western world did not react to the most turning points in history by stopping Germany, but let Hitler continue his war to swallow up more European countries.
This similar event made Europe realize the fatal mistake it had ignored before which caused the horrors of Second World War. It seems that Putin did not understand recent Russian history very well. They went beyond their border and occupied Afghanistan before, then faced a defeat and the whole Soviet -union- collapsed thereafter.
Going back in history, Russia has failed to follow the European path of Industrialization. Since Catherine the great attempt to modernize the Russian society. She faced so many problems with dominance of controlled agriculture production which continued until twenty century when the Bolshevik revolution took a place in 1917.
Recently, we heard about Wagner Mercenary Group who had launched their war jointly with Russian military. These Wagner Mercenaries had fought in Syria, Central Africa and Libya. They committed all kind of crimes against civilians.
Finally, I would say, If the western world abandoned Ukraine, then they have to wait soonerŽ-or-later on the Russians military knocking on their doors to conquer their homeland as Adolf Hitler did in second world war.
