The communists and Religion: A Response

These are my comments about Mr. Hamid Kashkoli’s article; http://www.ahewar.org/debat/show.art.asp?aid=239659.
Dear Mr Hamid
I think that in our societies, including Iraq, the communists have failed abysmally in addressing religion in a methodological fashion. Their comments, if they are even considered comments, are fleeting and superficial. Their views in this respect have been inconsistent and based on certain political agendas, rather than on sound intellectual and scientific analysis that provides the basis for adopting this or that political line.
Another problem is that our so-called ‘religious scientists’ are not scientists at all, and they know little or nothing about conducting research in religion or increasing the knowledge content in religion, or using religion to advance their societies and adapt to new technologies. Their religious views, in most cases, are based on political calculations and personal interests, rather than on formal theoretical or empirical research.
Another major problem is that we have no freedom of though in our universities, scientific institutes, or society in general, that encourages discussions and advancement of knowledge in religion, political sciences or otherwise.
Communists themselves tend, in tier turn, to use folk poetry, for example, as morphine to replace an intellectual dialogue with an emotional appeal.
Communists and leftists in general have failed to call for a secular society and believe, wrongly, that communist thoughts and ideas can coexist peacefully with the fanatic version of Islam we are witnessing now. This has caused communists to withdraw physically and intellectually, and become almost an invisible or ineffective force.
The religious and communist dogmas, by virtue of their being a dogma, is opposed to openness, free scientific inquiry and advancement of knowledge and society.
Communists themselves preach what they do not practice when it comes to democracy, and without democracy there can be no intellectual advancement or scientific progress. Therefore, both communists and the so-called religious scientists and intuitions, despite the superficial theoretical opposition, are equally dogmatic and opposed to knowledge advancement and scientific progress.
Many thanks for the excellent article.
