A “price list” for Yazidi and Christian females was issued last year by the so-called Islamic State’s Office of Money House. Just 24 hours after its release, Defend International Team was able to verify the authenticity of the document and a screenshot was posted on twitter by DI President Dr. Widad Akrawi, sparking a debate that lasted for almost a year. The same document has now been confirmed as genuine by the UN’s Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sexual Violence in Conflict.
IS “Price List” For Yazidi And Christian Females Verified By UN Official
A “price list” for Yazidi and Christian females as young as one year, issued by the so-called Islamic State’s Office of Money House on 16 October 2014, has been confirmed as genuine by Ms. Zainab Bangura, the UN’s Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sexual Violence in Conflict.
The document was first published by Iraqi News on 3 November 2014, listing the prices set for the purchase of sex-slaves and noting that “the market to sell women and spoils of war has been experiencing a significant decrease, which has adversely affected the Islamic State’s revenue and financing of the Mujahideen.” Along with our partners, Defend International Campaign Team worked hard to verify the authenticity of the document. When a conclusion was reached, a screenshot was posted on twitter by DI President Dr. Widad Akrawi on 4 November 2014.
The list written in Arabic includes detailed information on the prices of categorised Yazidi and Christian females according to their age at time of selling. Ages 1 to 9, 10 to 20, 20 to 30, 30 to 40 and 40 to 50 years old. According to the document, all children (Yazidis´-or-Christians) aged between one and nine are considered the most valuable and should be sold at the highest price on the list: 200,000 dinars (around 172-$-US).
Speaking to Bloomberg recently, Ms. Bangura described the horrifying trade in girls and women by IS, saying that the group’s ongoing “barbarity pose an unprecedented challenge.” She added: “The girls get peddled like barrels of petrol. One girl can be sold and bought by five´-or-six different men. Sometimes these fighters sell the girls back to their families for thousands of dollars of ransom.”
It is worth noting that Defend International is campaigning for justice for Yazidi and Christian females. Our members and supporters have revealed shocking evidence of abductions, systematic rape, exposure to HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, targeted killings, slavery, forced conversions, forced prostitution, forced marriages, torture and other forms of sexual and physical abuse of children and sex-slaves, many of which constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law. We will continue our commitment to help document crimes against humanity to ensure that all communities can live in peace and dignity.
