The necklace and the king

Poem by the Kurdish poetess : Shokhan aziz
Translation : Freeyad Ibrahim
************************************
A scream burns like an ember
Like an firebrand it blazes..!
Between the two rudders of the earth
Between wall and wall
And within them..
It vomits over faces
And in front of the doorsteps.
It devours the lips of the earth
squeezed in corners
It eats up our shoulders flesh.
It snaps the wombs.
It sticks to the clothes..

And the city falls
Before him..!
• where do those who don’t read but blood come from..!

They applauded the dwarfs
And for their venerable verses
For the sparks scattered from their eyes
For their piercing horns
For their straying desire
For the salty darkness shed over eyelashes
For the orphans down whose bony bodies
the clay-made angels roll
• Bravo, well- done, Oh! Turtle , what do you think of the furious flood..!

I wonder..
How would the mean and the rascals among kings and princes, and those who hold high positions and ranks in this afflicted nation
ever manage to heat the tin of politics
with their own farts..!
-Lo..what have the crystal necks to do with politics-
a desolate hyena blows in the firebrand of hatred.
A hand with fissured fingers grips on tightly the handgrip of the millstone.
Wolves emerge from the bowels.
One of them, oh! What a loathsome one..!
He presents a necklace millions of dollars worth embedded with diamonds and garnets
To the bush’s wife flatteringly.
Whilst Bagdad is within a stone’s range..
Where millions of children and orphans lay their bed on the rubbles and rubbish, their eternal abode under the scorching searing sky.
Where women clad in black search for the heads of their husbands in the dunghills and muckheaps.
Where the orphanage children raised tears to the world and tore the hearts of millions
Thin Skinny Skeletons rotten by worms.

Inside winding lobbies, amid marble palaces
Statues of wolves grimace with their fangs
Mouths suspending from rooftops
Bone skeletons crushed under feet.
Men rusted by Days
pass laws and their teachings,
Apes circumambulating the exalted kaaba
Hammers turn into levies
Mouths petrify
Arteries explode
And the Death- bulldozers advance..
Welcome to the utter - ruin ,and the destruction, the civilized furnace
Wherein the nearby and the far-off are baked , roasted tossed and toasted
Welcome..to the ever-present stranger amid us
Gouge out the eyes of the night,
And curb the daylight.
Rip the garments of the moon,
and break down the kohl- jars of the sun.
- And you..
-Oh, ye, Hullako..what do you want..?
A sword I sharpen,
And necks I twist .
