The adoption of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) by the United Nations General Assembly on 2nd of April 2013 constitutes the culmination of seven years of efforts to achieve a comprehensive Treaty to set the highest possible common international standards for effectively regulating the international conventional arms trade. The Treaty clearly demonstrates the commitment by the States Parties and the United Nations to human rights and international humanitarian law and to the fight against the irresponsible and illicit trade in conventional arms and their diversion in order to create a safer and better world. We commend those 13 States that have already deposited their instruments of ratification to the Arms Trade Treaty, most recently the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania. The 2nd of April 2014 will mark the first anniversary of the adoption of the Arms Trade Treaty. On this very symbolic date, we, a group of European --union-- Member States including Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain will jointly deposit our instruments of ratification. All other EU Member States are currently in the process of finalizing their national procedures and might soon be able to deposit their instruments of ratification and add their names to the above list of countries. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson has been invited to the ceremony and we look forward to his participation on behalf of His Excellency Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. We call for all other states that are ready to deposit their instrument of ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty to join us on the 2nd of April 2014, at 10:00 am in the Trusteeship Council Chamber in order to bring us an important step closer to the Treaty’s international entry into force, which requires 50 ratifications. Together, we hope to give a strong signal of support for the early entry into force of the ATT and to pave the way for other Nations to actively back the Treaty.
