Ibn Al-Rumi and the Home

(I swear not to sell the home I have
Nor to see someone occupying it.)

But I see it stained with blood
And the morning as dark as night.

I see the corpses of children on its soil
And their ripped entrails filling passages.

ابن الرومي والوطن
الأبيات التي بين قوسين هي لابن الرومي

( ولي وطن آلَـيتُ ألاّ أبيـعَـه
وألاّ أرى غيري له الدهـرَ مالكـا )

ولكنْ أراه بالـدِّمـاء مُضَرَّجاً
وأنظـرُ فيه الصّبـحَ كالّليل حـالـكا

أرى جُـثَـثَ الأطفال فوق تُـرابـه
مُـمَـزَّقـةَ الأوصال تَمـلا المَسـالكا



(I was prosperous in the spring of my youth
As prosperity of people live under your haven.)

What youth? What era? What prosperity?
The Ba’ath has annihilated people

It is the death fluttering over them,
Reaping souls and returning back laughing.




( عَـهِـدتُ به شرخَ الشَّبـاب ونعمـةً
كـنعمـة قـوم أصبحـوا في ظلالـكا )

فأيّ ُ شبـابٍ؟ أيّ ُ عهـدٍ؟ ونعـمـةٍ؟
فقـد أوردَ البـعثُ الأنـامَ المَهـالكـا

هو الموتُ خفـّاقـاً يرفـرف فـوقَـهم،
فيحـصُـدُ أرواحـاً ويرجـع ضـاحكا


(What made the homes lovely to people
Are desires that the youth got there.)

In prisons, deportations, and bereaved’s agony,
And a widow complaining to God from a blood shedder.

The departed bird may return to its nest,
If it finds no thorn there nor a thorny spike.

( وحـبَّبَ أوطـانَ الرِّجـال إليـهمُ
مـآربُ قَـضّـاها الشَّـبابُ هنـالكـا )

بسـجنٍ وتشـريـدٍ وغُـصَّـةِ ثاكـلٍ
وأرمـلـة تشكـو إلى الله سـافكـا

وقد يرجـع الطَّـيرُ الغـريبُ لعُـشِّـه
إذا لم يجـدْ شـوكاً هـنـاك وشائـكا


(When they remember their homes, they later remind them
By the youth time and they yearn to.)

The youth time had many tragedies,
Quenched with bitterness, plunged into wars.

How can someone yearn to chains,
After he freed self with strife?


( إذا ذكـروا أوطانَـهمْ ذكَّـرتْـهُـمُ
عـهـودَ الصِّبـا فيهـا فحنّـوا لذلكـا)

عـهـودُ الصِّـبـا كانتْ مـآسـِيَ جمّـةً
فقـد سُـقِـيَـتْ مُـرّاً وخـاضتْ معاركا

وكيفَ يَـحـِنّ ُالمـرءُ للقـيـد بعـدمـا
تحـرَّر من أصـفـاده مُـتَـهـالـكا ؟
