Defend International is alarmed by reports that Egypt is currently divided into opponents and supporters of Mr. Morsy. We are deeply concerned over this escalating political crisis. We call for a peaceful resolution and hope that Egyptians will employ the ultimate democratic means of compromise and different forms of constructive dialogue without the use of violence and without the involvement of military forces. We call on the Egyptian leader to solve the country´s crisis by taking steps aimed at addressing the concerns of protesters and urge Egyptians to find a path towards negotiations and collaboration to ultimately avoid bloodshed.

Defend International is alarmed by the political crisis in Egypt. Millions of people are demanding that Mr. Morsy respect the ultimatum issued by the army threatening to intervene if he does not meet the demands of the people, while thousands of his supporters are defending the president´s legitimacy.

DI is deeply concerned that Mr. Morsy is unwilling to respond to concerns of protesters and has rejected the military´s ultimatum, insisting he would continue working towards national reconciliation. According to reports received from members of DI network, the increased polarization reflects the widespread belief among Egyptians that Mr. Morsy has broken his promises and that his lack of vision and sensibility has brought Egypt to this sad point. They highlight that millions of people are disappointed by his policies that have failed to deliver jobs, transparency, and economic growth. At the same time, DI expresses concern over reports of police and security forces neither protecting protesters nor actively preventing acts of violence against them and bystanders. At least 20 peoples have been killed in protests and security forces did not intervene to stop recent deadly clashes between opponents and supporters of Mr. Morsy.

DI underlines that what we have witnessed in Egypt is an evident failure to uphold human rights, including the exercise of the right to civil disobedience. DI calls on the Egyptian leader to solve the country´s political crisis by taking steps aimed at addressing the concerns of protesters. DI is also calling for urgent intervention by the Egyptian authorities in order to immediately put an end to all forms of harassment against the protesters. Unfortunately, to date, security forces have not taken any steps to thoroughly and impartially investigate these allegations, follow where evidence leads, and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. They have also failed to engage in peaceful negotiations with the protesters. We urge authorities to respect the will of the Egyptian people and to provide, without delay, all injured protesters, regardless of their political affiliation, access to qualified medical care.
