First measure to clear away the long-lasting oppression of the people of Palestine

The Palestinian UN membership bid by the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has once again brought the question of Palestine to the fore, and caused wide reactions and line-ups. The diplomatic efforts for a Palestinian UN membership are another manifestation of the factor of people’s power in the recent revolutions. The on-going revolutions in Arab-speaking countries for freedom, equality, and welfare have actually forced all governments and forces that have been involved in creation, duration, and insolubleness of the Palestinian question to a defensive position. All are activated – from Islamists and nationalists as Hamas, Al-Fatah, and Hezbollah to the regimes of Israel, Iran, Arab countries and western governments.

The Israeli government and its supporters, with the U.S. at the head of them, are under pressure from the revolutions which are over-throwing their allied regimes in Arab countries, and from the people of Israel who in their protests declare "this is Al-Tahrir, this is Cairo"! Rulers and regimes in the Arab countries that have combined to the continuation of the oppression of the people of Palestine are forced in a tight corner by people’s revolutionary rises. Political Islam currents that make use of suppression on the people of Palestine for their own reactionary aims are also marginalized and have lost their influence due to the on-going revolutions.

Amidst all this, The Palestinian Authority has found the opportunity favourable to take the initiative. The request of UN membership is taking place in the old framework of the balance of strengths, negotiations, and relations among forces traditionally involved in the question of Palestine. Recognition of the state of Palestine by the UN and Israel in itself is, however, a step towards breaking the vicious circle of war-talks – war among those reactionary powers.

In these circumstances, U.S. threat to veto the request, EU efforts to keep the matter out of the UN, Israeli threat to stop the peace negotiations, alongside opposing position of Islamic currents, especially Hamas – all are to endure the existing situation and not to resolve the question of Palestine.

Worker-communist Party of Iran consider the recognition of the state of Palestine as a first step to eliminate suppression on the suffering people of Palestine, and severely condemn all efforts to avert recognition of the independent state of Palestine as a factor of preserving the existing situation and continuation of one of the most painful and lasted tragedies of the contemporary world. WPI call upon the revolutionary people of the region and all freedom-loving political forces across the world to actively support the building of an independent and equal state of Palestine.
