Syria, one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and Syrians always proudly say; Syria is the cradle of civilizations. Today, the situation in Syria indicates to numbers of difficulties and concerns, especially after the huge protests in the Arab world and the Middle East.
In January-15- 2011, Tunisians kicked their dictator Ben Ali out of the country. Ten days later, Egyptians demonstrated against Mubarak who finally resigned after 18 days of demonstrations, Yemenis demonstrated against president Saleh, Jordanians, Sudanese and Algerians did the same, But what about Syria? Is there any indicator could tell us that Syrians are on their way to do the same? Do the interior Syrian files bear difficulties and troubles as same as the other countries in the region?
Since1963, Syria is under control of Ba ath party, and since 1970 under control of Al-Assad dynasty. for more than four decades, Syrians were prohibited to practice politic , no one is able to talk about public affairs even those which related directly to his ordinary life, such as salaries, bread, housing and of course corruption.
simply, that indicates to society where opportunities are not exist, and gab widening between two classes; a few of regime s men who have every thing and can do businesses without legislative environment, and majority of people who have nothing but their daily meal .necessarily, no middle class in society like this because the only classes movement is a magnetically one, up or down.
Politically, Syria has about four huge historical ideological parties: Ba ath, communists, Syrian national and Muslim brotherhood. Except Muslim brotherhood, the rest are in coalition. After Bashar Al-Assad succeeded his father as president, Syria became more open and there is a slowly progress in freedom of speech and press which still under the state of emergency.
External factor had played a major role in reducing the level of the opening-up in Syria within the past seven years.
For me, it is easy to say, that the situation in Syria is simply as diabetes mellitus. However, diabetes mellitus has three types:
Type number one diabetes; results from the body s failure to produce insulin. insulin in Syria is the struggle of opposition and the social activists with their own new though, ideas and experiences.
After the 1980s , Syrian society was unable to produce new ideas, new leadership and of course new future.
About one year after president Hafez Al Assad death, the Syrian in both camps, the regime and the opposition ,were quietly naked before the world. Assad s son ,Bashar, declared a new era in Syria, zero out of twenty million Syrian could involve in what the new president hopes and wants, because in the third millennium , Syrian people maximum ambition is to secure their daily poor meal. So ,no time for political, economy, development and growth thought and training!.
In fact ,that year, Syria maybe only has some technical institutions, but for gulf not for Syria. However, those institutions were preparing Syrians not to be involved in the Syrian job market ,but to be far away in the Gulf.
Situation in Syria today, as the past twenty years, has the same indications and the same ideas, and if the opposition stay chanting it s same speeches about the regime s bloody dictatorship, it will ear nothing even from the people when decide to step the regime down!.
Type number two diabetes ; results from body s cells which refuse to receive or interact with insulin. As I said , insulin here means the Syrian opposition and social activists who are involving in many processes to develop both the social and political situations, however, many times those activists became a target of assault from people, which means ,that the society still refuse change. In 2003, when we organized a demonstration in Aleppo demanding to release a group of twelve political prisoners and for even never put them in trial, pass-Byers where gazing at us as if we were a kind of UFO.
I remember one ordinary man when he said to me: don’t invite me, Syria will stay the same as you see, we are Syrians, we are Arabs, Kurdish and Turks, we are Orientals.
Social issues in Syria are more difficult to debate. Some Syrian people assault a group of activists when they invite them to sign in a list of demands which related with abolish of crime of honor, and to change the personnel statues laws.
Type number three occur only when pregnancy, which means that Syria is not interested in those days.
When I first time read about the diabetes mellitus, I said to myself: its exactly what Syria suffering from, isn t it ?
