After experiencing disappointing love affair, the Italian "Pietro Della Valle" started a new page of his life. That rich life, which was filling of geographic and archaeological discoveries, also was filling of adventures. He went to explore the mysteries of the world after he failed to explore the mysteries of women. In the city of Rome, he suffered from isolation, but the lure and the ambiguity of the east took him away of that isolation. He found himself at sea on June 8, 1614.
He visited Istanbul first and wrote about the habits, traditions, songs and clothes of its people. He sent many letters to his friend, the poet "Mario Skibano". These important letters became the key unraveling the mysteries to of the east to the people who are coming after him.
Baghdad city took his attention strongly, so that he traveled to Baghdad, the city of magic and1000 nights and a night. He explained that the city of Baghdad has not built on the ruins of the ancient Babylon city, as it was common at that time: it is a modern city built by Arab Muslims. Valle studied the rich heritage of Iraq, like all countries he went through. He mixed with all types of people and acquainted with the well known of them. He learned Arabic, Turkish, Childanian, and Persian languages.
Valle lived in Baghdad and got a unique experience that changed his life. An intimacy has grown between a Christian family named "Guereda", and him. He felt in love with "Maani", the beautiful daughter of that family. She was 18 years old. After much effort, he was able to convince the family to marry "Maani" and to take her with him on his long journey to explore the mysteries of the east. She accompanied him on his visit to Babylon, Kabala and the surrounding cities. He described the shrine of Imam "Hussein" and his brother" Abbas", and sent an accurate description of those shrines and cities in several letters to his friend, the poet.
Despite the difficulties of travel, Valle did not miss the romantic of the young men of Rome that their ancient culture has inspired. He wrote the poem "Crown Guereda" that was flirting with his beautiful lover while they were traveling to Isfahan/Iran. Then he asked one of the painters to paint a picture of his sweetheart to send it to his family in Italy. He wanted to show them the beauty and elegance of his girlfriend, but the picture has not completed because a high fever afflicted "Maani" and caused first to miscarriage her and then her death in December 1621 at the age of 23 years. However, he sent the picture tried to tell them, this incomplete picture for that incomplete happiness.
The shock of the death of his wife made him acting strangely. He mummified the body of his wife and carried in a coffin made of sandalwood .That coffin was still roaming with him for four years, visited Persia, India, Syria and the Arabian Sea. Finally, he delivered it to Rome and buried in the cemetery of his family.
Valle returned to Rome after 12 years of his departure, carrying his wife s body with a treasure of information solved the mysteries of the east the eyes of west. Valle s insight and information brought back with him subsequently became an important source of explorers, travelers, and researchers." Palazzo Della Valle" in Rome became a museum, frequenting by researchers into the mysteries of the East, and became a place of pilgrimage for lovers who were impressed by the story of love and loyalty.
