Karl Popper

A. .... Wittgenstein was presiding over the meeting-;- Popper was the invited speaker, addressing the question Are there philosophical problems? Supposedly Wittgenstein got so angry at Popper s remarks that he picked up a poker from the fireplace and began waving it around in an intimidating way. Then he stormed out of the room. At some point Popper, pressed to give an example proving his claim that there were valid moral rules, said something like, Thou shalt not threaten a visiting lecturer with a poker. .....م-2

B. The other leg of Popper’s criticism of Marxism stood on a mis-quotation in his book The Poverty of Historicism (1957). Popper attacked the notion that there are laws of human development, and that these laws enable us to predict the future course of human history, and he quoted from Marx’s Capital, where the aim is “to lay bare the economic law of motion of human society"......م-3

C. .... “I had been shocked by the fact that the Marxists… were able to interpret any conceivable event as a verification of their theories".....م-4

D. .... Today his followers among philosophers of science are a diminishing minority, convinced that Popper s vast reputation is enormously inflated. I agree. I believe that Popper s reputation was based mainly on this persistent but misguided efforts to restate common-sense views in a novel language that is rapidly becoming out of fashion. Consider Popper s best known claim: that science does not proceed by "induction"—that is, by finding confirming instances of a conjecture — but rather by falsifying bold, risky conjectures. Conformation, he argued, is slow and never certain. By contrast, a falsification can be sudden and definitive. Moreover, it lies at the heart of the scientific method. ....م-5

E. .... A familiar example of falsification concerns the assertion that all crows are black. Every find of another black crow obviously confirms the theory, but there is always the possibility that a non-black crow will turn up. If this happens, the conjecture is instantly discredited. The more often a conjecture passes efforts to falsify it, Popper maintained, the greater becomes its "corroboration," although corroboration is also uncertain and can never be quantified by degree of probability. Popper s critics insist that "corroboration" is a form of induction, and Popper has simply sneaked induction in through a back door by giving it a new name. David Hume s famous question was "How can induction be justified?" It can t be, said Popper, because there is no such thing as induction!.........م-6

F. ..... Popper s solution was certainly correct in one respect. The problem of induction would indeed vanish if there were no such thing as induction. However, the issue would be resolved much more positively were it to turn out that Hume had been wrong, and that there never had been any problem with induction in the first place. And, in point of fact, this is the case. Despite his great skill as a thinker and writer, Hume missed the point. Induction does not depend for its validity on observation, but on the Law of Identity.....م-7

G. Astronomers look for signs of water on Mars. They do not think they are making efforts to falsify the conjecture that Mars never had water.........م-8

8. ...........

H. ........... For Popper, what his chief rival Rudolf Carnap called a "degree of confirmation"—a logical relation between a conjecture and all relevant evidence—is a useless concept.............م-9

I. .. They are instead looking for confirmations. Ernest Nagel, Columbia University s famous philosopher of science, in his Teleology Revisited and Other Essays in the Philosophy and History of Science (1979), summed it up this way: "[Popper s] conception of the role of falsification . . . is an oversimplification that is close to being a caricature of scientific procedures....م-10
"Why are the calculi of logic and arithmetic applicable to reality?"

J. ..if we consider a proposition such as "2 + 2 = 4", then it may be applied - for example to apples - in two different senses... In the first of these senses, the statement "2 apples + 2 apples = 4 apples" is taken to be irrefutable and logically true. But it does not describe any fact involving apples - any more than "All apples are apples" does. ...it is based ... on certain definitions of the signs "2", "4", "+" and "="....م-11

K. In his searing, passionate indictment The Condition of the Working Class in England, Engels predicted that the English workers would soon exact bloody revenge for the sufferings inflicted on them by the bourgeoisie. In a preface written 47 years later, Engels commented on "the many prophecies, amongst others that of an imminent social revolution, that my youthful ardour induced me to venture upon". Referring to that book in 1863, while he was working on Capital, Marx wrote this poignant note to Engels:

"Re-reading your book has made me regretfully aware of our increasing age. How freshly and passionately, with what bold anticipations and no learned and scientific doubts, the thing is still dealt with here! And the very illusion that the result will leap into the daylight of history tomorrow´-or-the day after gives the whole thing a warmth and vivacious humour — compared with which the later grey on grey makes a damned unpleasant contrast.".....م-12

L. Marx had shared his friend s illusions, but when writing his masterpiece, his motto was "to doubt everything". He allowed himself flashes of anger — but no anticipation of the results that would emerge from his study. Capital was a strictly scientific study of the capitalist economy. Marx discussed the methods of science and commented: "In the analysis of economic forms, moreover, neither microscopes nor chemical reagents are of use. The force of abstraction must replace both." He analysed commodities, labour, value and profit, using the "force of abstraction" with great effect...... م-13

M. After the second world war, capitalism in the United States, Western Europe and Japan, stabilised and developed. Meanwhile even authentic revolutions, such as the Chinese, were led by "Marxist-Leninists" and resulted in states that were similar to the Soviet -union-. Today, despite economic crises, advanced capitalism still shows no signs of collapsing by itself, and there are still no proletarian states in existence.

This has disoriented many Marxists who thought, like Ron, that Marxism cannot be scientific if it failed to predict these developments. But Marxism can only predict the struggle, not the outcome of the struggle. We will achieve better results when we give up wishful thinking about an automatic "world revolution" (which somehow compels "Marxist-Leninists" to create workers states), and strive to create a Marxist analysis of the contemporary world that is truly scientific....م-14

N. ... Consider the current hypothesis that there is a quantum field called the Higgs field, with its quantized particle. If a giant atom smasher some day, perhaps soon, detects a Higgs, it will confirm the conjecture that the field exist. At the same time it will falsify the opinion of some top physicists, Oxford s Roger Penrose for one, that there is no Higgs field.....م-15
