Iraqi Communist Party Holds its 8th National Congress in Baghdad

The 8th National Congress of the Iraqi Communist Party was held in Baghdad during the period 10- 13 May 2007, under the slogan “Let us consolidate the party ranks and work for uniting the people’s patriotic ! ang1033 forces, to achieve security and stability, restore full national sovereignty, and build a unified democratic and federal Iraq”.

The Congress began with a minute of silence to commemorate the martyrs of the party and the Iraqi patriotic movement. After endorsing the Standing Orders report, the Secretary of the party’s Central Committee, comrade Hamid! 057 Majeed Musa, delivered the opening speech.

The delegates then elected the working committees of the Congress, including those in charge of four workshops for discussing the political report, the party programme, inner party norms, and the ideological document. The ! 3 agenda also included organisational, financial and administrative reports.

The delegates considered issues relevant to strengthening the Communist Party’s role in the country’s life on all levels. Special attention was paid to the ongoing political process, its prospects and the Iraqi people’s aspirations t! o defeat terrorism and sectarianism, ensure security and stability, improve the people’s well-being, provide basic services and needs, and provide the prerequisites for achieving full independence and national sovereignty, end the fo! reign military presence57 and occupation legacy, and build a unified democratic and federal Iraq.

In a responsible manner and in an atmosphere of transparency, free discussion and democratic debate, the delegates considered, scrutinised, amended and finally endorsed the draft documents presented to the Congress. They also endorsed! 057 a number of resolutions and recommendations.

The Congress received greeting messages from prominent figures, and from numerous Iraqi political organisations, as well as fraternal communist and workers parties. Among the first messages received was one from Mr Jalal Talabani, the! g2057 Iraqi President and the Secretary General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

On its final working day, the Congress elected the members of the new Central Committee of the party, which then held a meeting and unanimously elected comrade Hamid Majeed Mousa as its Secretary. It also elected! g2057 its Political Bureau.

The 8th National Congress concluded its work amid the enthusiasm of delegates, the representatives of Iraqi Communists, and their determination to continue to serve the cause of the people and homeland, and achieve the party’s slogan: ltrch“For a Free Homeland and Prosperous People”.
